Is Royal Honey Safe? Side Effects, Interactions and Who Should Avoid It
What to know before trying royal honey: allergen risks, medical conditions and medications that don't mix with it, and who shouldn't use it.
Royal honey is a food supplement, not a medicine, and like any supplement it isn't right for everyone. Below is a plain-language summary of the safety points we publish in full on our Safety & Disclaimer page. Please read that page before you buy, especially if anything here applies to you.
Allergy risk comes first
Every royal honey product starts with a honey base and usually adds royal jelly, bee pollen or bee larva powder depending on the brand. These are bee products, and bee products can trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive people: anaphylaxis, asthma flare-ups, skin rashes. If you have any known allergy to honey, pollen or other hive products, skip royal honey entirely.
Medical conditions and medication interactions
Talk to a doctor first if you have high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or kidney or liver dysfunction. This matters even more if you're on prescription medication: nitrates and blood thinners in particular do not mix safely with the herbal stimulant ingredients some royal honey brands include. Get medical advice before trying any royal honey product, not just ours, if you take any prescription medication.
Who should not use it
- Anyone under 19 (or the legal age of majority in their province or territory).
- Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Anyone with a known bee-product allergy.
- Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney/liver issues, without medical clearance first.
If something feels wrong
Stop taking it and seek medical attention if you experience any allergic reaction, chest pain, irregular heartbeat or other symptoms that concern you. Never exceed the manufacturer's suggested one-sachet (or one-pouch) serving in any 24-hour period. More is not better, and higher doses simply haven't been tested or recommended.
Gold Royal Honey VIP, Etumax Royal Honey and Black Bull Extreme Honey are natural supplements. They are not evaluated by Health Canada or the FDA to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Read our Safety & Disclaimer page and speak to a healthcare professional before use, especially if you take prescription medication or have a heart condition.
